Girls’ hockey, gymnasts returning to state The St. Croix Valley Fusion girls’ hockey team and the River Falls High School gymnastics team both earned return trips to state at their respective sectionals Saturday. The Fusion defeated Hudson 3-1 in a sectional final Saturday night at Hunt Arena while the Wildcat gymnasts took first at the 8-team Division 2 sectional tournament in Holmen.

Five overtime thriller The River Falls boys hockey team did its best Tuesday night to keep Superior from making it to a ninth straight WIAA State Tournament, but in a game that lasted nearly four hours and included a total of 96 shots on goal, the Spartans outlasted the Wildcats, 2-1, with a goal 30 seconds into the fifth overtime in a sectional semifinal in Superior.

Good sports The River Falls traveling Mites hockey team, coached by Kent Manglitz, won the Sportsmanship Award at the Mite A Tournament in Onalaska Jan. 30-31. Back on Jan. 9-10, the team took second place in a Mite A Tournament in Baldwin.

Days Gone By PressPass

Days Gone By Now retired Chancellor Gary Thibodeau drops the ceremonial first puck at the first-ever women’s varsity hockey game at UW-River Falls’ Hunt Arena on Nov. 5, 1999, against Gustavus Adolphus. Local Olympic hockey star Karyn Bye is behind Thibodeau. The Falcons lost, but it didn’t dampen opening night festivities.

Wildcat captains play Westside Wildcat hockey team captains joined Amy Hafeman’s phyed class at Westside Elementary for a game of floor hockey. After Captains, Zach Lindquist, Dylan Dock and Mark Bennett, talked about leadership and sportsmanship. Fun was had by all.
