Wild Side: The one that got away

Wild Side: The one that got away Joe Lewinski drove us through falling snow to the Minneapolis airport early in the morning on Feb. 15. Later that same day we were back again under the coconut palms in Belize with our friends Bill and Sue Smith and Sandy Linehan of River Falls. We enjoyed some cold Belikan beers and met some of our Belizean friends.

Wild Side: Bare bones show in winter PressPass

Wild Side: Bare bones show in winter It's often hard to see the forest for the trees in the summer. The shapes of the trees, shrubs and ground vegetation are hidden by the profusion of foliage.

Wild Side: River flowing through us PressPass

I’ve had a life-long fascination with water. My father took our family fishing on Lake Erie and canoeing in the Canadian wilderness when I was a boy.

Wild Side: Color and action in winter shades of gray PressPass

Big flakes of snow came down through the fog Sunday morning. It was the last day of a January thaw. Looking out across the valley, we could see only vague outlines of the trees. Cardinals perched like Christmas ornaments on a red osier dogwood bush next to the bird feeder lent color to the winter scene.

Wild Side: Is it cold enough for you? PressPass

A south wind blew in some 20-degree air last Sunday afternoon. It seemed absolutely balmy after a month that was about 15 degrees colder than average. It was a treat to be outside without my nose instantly freezing up and triggering a sneezing jag.

Wild Side: Global climate change is not a myth PressPass

On Nov. 21 we were deer hunting south of Foster’s End in the Flambeau State Forest in Sawyer County. It was foggy at dawn. As the sun burned through the haze, frost rained from the trees and the temperature got up to about 50 degrees.

In 1869 the German zoologist Ernst Haeckel defined ecology as the study of the “house” (based on the Greek oikos), as a body of knowledge about the economy of nature, the interactions between the organic and inorganic environments.

Wild Side: A kettle of hawks? PressPass

Wild Side: A kettle of hawks? The astronomical end of summer was Sept. 22. Soybean fields have turned yellow and maple trees are starting to show their fall colors. After several weeks of warm summer September weather, it’s finally cooling down a bit.

Wild Side: Buckets of rain for a change PressPass

Is global climate change affecting us here? A persistent North American jet stream pattern has given us an abnormal pattern of very dry conditions and unusually cool temperatures this summer. Rainfall has been less than 50 percent of normal in the northern half of the state.

Wild Side: Splendor rising from the ashes PressPass

Wild Side: Splendor rising from the ashes After the recent hot and muggy spell, the cool dry northwest wind and clear blue sky last Sunday were a treat. I mowed our trails along the planted prairie on the hill. It was so pretty I had to walk back up there, look around and take some pictures.

Wild Side: Beware of black bears in the backyard PressPass

Wild Side: Beware of black bears in the backyard Many of us have seen black bears in the wild, mostly in the northern third of Wisconsin. The current estimate is that there about 12,000 bears in the state.
