Days Gone By (Aug. 13) Maureen Ash and her husband Richard Purdy were featured in a Aug. 3, 2000, River Falls Journal story about organic farming on their 200-acres of lush farmland using Suffolk draft horses to plow and plant their vegetable fields. “Suffolk is the oldest and rarest breed of draft horse in the world,” Ash said. “Suffolks are on the critical list of the American Livestock Breeds Conservation.” The certified organic farmers supply produce to the Whole Earth Grocery and the Farmers Market, along with other outlets in Minnesota, and have managed to show a profit for the past nine years.
