Miracle fundraisers

Miracle fundraisers Jim and Joyce Jackman of River Falls are the grandparents of these four youngsters, three of whom, along with other participants in Litchfield, Minn., took part in the MiracleKids Thriathlon held last month in Chanhassen, Minn. The group raised $10,000 for the Miracles of Mitch Foundation, which serves families with a child battling cancer in a Minnesota hospital. With the exception of Garrison Jackman, in center foreground, his older sisters and brother who took part are, from left to right: Sydney, Ariana and Kal Jackman.

Hotel helped in prostitution sting; River Falls man arrested

Area law enforcement got cooperation from a Cottage Grove, Minn., hotel to perform a prostitution sting that netted nine arrests earlier this month.

Instead, the two Farmington men escaped tragedy, then spent the new few hours watching from shore as crews fished their truck and trailer out of the water.

What a fish! PressPass

What a fish! On Thursday evening, June 17, Brian Klawitter of Trophy Catfishing and Sturgeon Adventures, located in Lakeland, Minn., took Mike and Mallory McCarty of River Falls cat fishing on the Mississippi River. At 1 a.m. Friday, Mike held on as a 32-lb. "river monster" fought for its freedom and was eventually caught and released.

Teacher of the year PressPass

Westside Elementary School teacher Jean Wespetal was named a Fox 9 News Teacher of the Year after being nominated for the honor by Westside parents Stacha and Stephen Reed. Wespetal was one of nine are teachers chosen from over 1,000 applicants. According to Westside Principal Mike Ballard, “Mrs. Wespetal’s passion for her students and career, willingness to devote her own personal time to help her students, and ability to improve the self-esteem of the children she works with were a few of the reasons provided for winning the award.”

Unwanted motel lover allegedly naked and fighting mad PressPass

A 25-year-old local man was cited for disorderly conduct at the downtown Best Western motel for allegedly pushing around a young woman who wanted him out of the room she and her friends had paid for to stay the night. The man was found naked in bed with another woman from the same group. The two had returned to the room earlier in the night after meeting at a downtown bar where they’d been dancing.

Star on ice PressPass

Star on ice Elisabeth Oberlin, a 4th grade student at Westside Elementary School, recently competed in the Northland Figure Skating Competition held in Duluth. Oberlin placed first in the Jumps event, first in Freestyle, and second in the Compulsory event. She is a member of the Starlight Ice Dance Club and is coached by Leah Flanagan. She also takes lessons at the UW-RF Hunt Arena Skating School. Oberlin currently competes at the Pre-Preliminary level.
