Book Reviews: Rehashing the infamous rabble-rousers
“Now that science has attained its youth and superstition is in its dotage, the trembling, palsied wreck says to the athlete: ‘Let us be friends.’ It reminds me of the bargain the cock wished to make with the horse: ‘Let us agree not to step on each other’s feet.’” —Robert Ingersoll, 1885

20 YEARS AGO, JAN. 28, 1993
A rain-ice storm hit the area last Wednesday afternoon bringing traffic to a stop, turning pavements into ice and using more than three times the amount of salt generally needed. School District Transportation Supervisor Ron Weishaar said 18 school buses either got stuck or the drivers decided against further travel, staying put until county or town salt trucks came to help. In some cases parents were called and asked to fetch their children at the locations where the buses were marooned. Area residents pitched in and offered blankets, magazines and food to the drivers.
