A rain-ice storm hit the area last Wednesday afternoon bringing traffic to a stop, turning pavements into ice and using more than three times the amount of salt generally needed. School District Transportation Supervisor Ron Weishaar said 18 school buses either got stuck or the drivers decided against further travel, staying put until county or town salt trucks came to help. In some cases parents were called and asked to fetch their children at the locations where the buses were marooned. Area residents pitched in and offered blankets, magazines and food to the drivers.

River Falls Police found a 29-year-old local woman in the station lobby Sunday night, Jan. 20. She was crying and holding her hand, allegedly claiming that she'd lost her temper and repeatedly punched out her 30-year-old live-in boyfriend.
