Woodworking: Readers: Don’t pass up this book of letters
Call me a fuddy-duddy, but I’m concerned about all the tweeting and blogging and electronic means of communication that goes on these days. It’s dangerous because everyone seems to be doing it while driving high-powered automobiles, but that’s not my worry.

Book Report: Another word on former presidents; waxing poetic on the death of a fly
Three American presidents lead off this week’s roster of books: Franklin Roosevelt, Dwight Eisenhower and Richard Nixon. You could fill libraries with what has already been written by these guys, but leave it to the scholars — they can always find a niche that’s unfilled.

Days Gone By: April 3, 2003
With the 2003 Iraq invasion beginning the war was hitting home. The River Falls Journal was putting together a special on area soldiers, beginning with local flyer U.S. Navy Lt. David “Raz” Rasmussen, a 1990 River Falls High School graduate, serving aboard the USS Kitty Hawk flying a FA-18 hornet over Iraq. Thanks to modern technology, the interview with editor Phil Pfuehler was done via email between flights.

Book Report: A new Scandinavian thriller takes the stage
I’m way behind in my coverage of the Scandinavian thriller surge in world publishing, not having even read a Stieg Larsson thriller, so I’ll try to make it up by reviewing a finely wrought thriller by first-time Swedish author Alexander Soderberg. It’s “The Andalucian Friend,” (Crown, $26), translated by Neil Smith.

Editorial: Gun control: Time to take commons-sense steps for our protection
Editor’s Note: The following guest editorial was written by Eric Johnson, St. Croix County district attorney since 1989. Johnson, a graduate of Luther College and Hamline University School of Law, was also district attorney in Pierce County from 1984-89. He served as president of the Wisconsin District Attorney’s Association in 1990 and 1995. Since 1984 Johnson has been elected to district attorney positions as a Republican. It’s time. It’s time to enact and support meaningful and effective gun control and registration.

Book Report: Son carries on, expands war narrative
As the River Falls Reads program winds down and folks who have read and enjoyed Michael Shaara’s Pulitzer-Prize winning novel about the Battle of Gettysburg, “The Killer Angels,” are looking for new reading material, I’m happy to report that although Shaara died in 1988, his family lives on in the person of his son, Jeff Shaara, who also writes about the Civil War and has completed his father’s trilogy with “Gods and Generals” and “The Last Full Measure.”

Days Gone By: Feb. 8, 1996
Editor’s Note: The winter of 1996 was a particularly grueling one for River Falls. Schools had been closed several times due to rain, snow and ice storms blanketing the region in January, motorists were stranded, road crews worked around the clock, ditches were full of snow so there was nowhere for more to go, and in the latest cold snap, residents were without power — even gas pipes broke. The following are recollections printed in the River Falls Journal during that time. Two new weather records were reached when the mercury hit 32-below one night and 35-degrees below two days later on Friday, Feb. 2.

Book Reviews: Rehashing the infamous rabble-rousers
“Now that science has attained its youth and superstition is in its dotage, the trembling, palsied wreck says to the athlete: ‘Let us be friends.’ It reminds me of the bargain the cock wished to make with the horse: ‘Let us agree not to step on each other’s feet.’” —Robert Ingersoll, 1885
