River Falls Superintendent Tom Westerhaus will continue to be the administrative head of the school district for at least the next two years. Monday night the school board approved his contract that will run through June 30, 2014.

The school board was given a second major resignation letter this week when Superintendent Tom Westerhaus gave his Thursday, Jan. 17. Westerhaus's resignation will go into effect as of June 30. A few days earlier River Falls High School Principal Elaine Baumann turned in her letter of resignation for the end of the current school year.

You know the school year is nearly upon us when high school athletic programs begin their practices for fall competition. Activities Director Rollie Hall reports that practices for football, boys soccer, girls and boys cross country, girls tennis, girls swimming, and girls golf are in full swing, and that by the time this column is printed, golf, tennis, and soccer will have had their season’s first competition with other schools.

The River Falls School District’s annual meeting was held earlier this week, as prescribed by state statute. The agenda had the routine business of setting salaries for school board members and public authorization to sell obsolete or unneeded school property, but it also included the very important presentation of the 2012-13 school year budget, followed by the public hearing on the current budget and a resolution to the school board regarding setting of the tax levy for the 2012-13 school year, which the board will vote on formally later this fall.
