Mary Jo Probst-Nelson, daughter of Harvey and Bernie Probst, part of River Falls High School Class of 1970, wife of Dwight Nelson, mom of Jonathan Earl and Sarah Nelson, and now known as “Saver of the Arch,” shared her story of rescuing the old shell arch that used to be situated on the south end of Ingram Center’s lawn, facing Maple Street.

Glen Park pool was set to open Memorial Day weekend, announced Parks and Rec Director Cindy Danke. She said a new liner is in and all ready to go and a brand new slide has been installed. Daily fees were $1.50 for those 5 and older, with season passes $25 each.

JULY 18, 2002 — Theme for the 2002 River Falls Days was the “Kinni Runs Through It.” After taking a year off, pageantry came back with “Ambassadors” of River Falls in 2001, rather than “Miss River Falls.” Candidates this year included, from left: Tyleah Strusz, Trista Struve, Gabrielle Meyer, Holly VanDynHoven and Kayla Erickson. Struve and Meyer were chosen as 2002 River Falls Ambassadors. Medallion finder was sixteen-year-old Tony Jenkins, who found it near the Kinnickinnic at the site of the old Cedar Street bridge.

March 14, 1963: Cold feet, aching limbs end result for hikers: A weary group of eight was the remainder of a party of ten who began an eight-mile hike down the Kinnickinnic river to check out the possibility of building another dam to generate more power for the city. Jim Young, Wes Johnson, Mayor Spike Hoffman, Dick Fox, Dr. R.A. Pennington, Bruce Pennington, Lyle Zastrow and Stan Hofstedt, utilities department manager, completed the journey.

Former UWRF Animal Science Equine student Jennifer Easton gave back to her college in a big way. After being ranked fourth in the world in 1999 by the National Reining Horse Association, she donated over $500,000 to the university’s horse science program, making possible a much needed new colt barn at Lab Farm #1 on Wasson Lane.

In 2002 the former middle school building, now called “River Falls Academy” on Maple and Fremont Streets, was housing 13 renters, three school, and a handful of rooms used as storage by the school district. Joan Malloy’s HeartStrings Studio, was one of the first tenants to move into the building in August of 2001.

The 99-year-old “Freeman House” at 220 North Third St., owned by Paul and Marge Stokke since 1972, was named an historic landmark, with a plaque installed out front and owners obligated to preserve external features of the house. The house was built by Arthur Symes, grandfather to cousins Kirby and John, and purchased by original Freeman Drugstore owner R.S. Freeman and his wife. The house has many charming features including leaded and beveled glass windows, unique sliding glass door, curved dormer, and Palladian sets of windows.
