River Falls battery suspect steals truck, goes for joyride
A 20-year-old local man allegedly punched his girlfriend in the face five times before getting away on foot at 233 W. Cascade Ave. last Thursday, June 28, after 1 a.m. Police searched all over but couldn’t find their suspect. The man had found an unlocked pickup truck with keys in the ignition in the 500 block of North Clark Street. He got in, drove off, stopped for gas at the downtown Holiday station, then drove off again toward St. Cloud, Minn., stopping to pull over for a nap.

Suspects learn: Hiding is futile
A handful of underage college students tried hiding from River Falls police sweeping an apartment at 215 W. Cascade Ave. after midnight Saturday, April 27. Officers had responded to a large party noise complaint. Those students who showed themselves were warned and released. Those found hiding in various rooms were given drinking citations.

In downtown business news, former UW all-American “Woody” Fangmeier opened Innate Chiropractic at 650 S. Main St.; Scott Reuter’s “No Job Too Small” STR Construction got its start, Jerae and husband Pete Hanson were bringing the bar business back to the old Corner Saloon spot at 126-128 N. Main St., most recently housing “The Booth” a youth center now to be called “The Hoosegow;” St. Croix Valley Habitat for Humanity received a $6,000 grant from Edina Realty Foundation; and Cellular One at 209 N. Main Street offered 3,600 minutes a month for $24.99 plus a free Nokia 5165 cell phone with a one or two year contract. The plan also included 600 anytime minutes, free unlimited mobile-to-mobile, and free nationwide long distance.

In 2002 the former middle school building, now called “River Falls Academy” on Maple and Fremont Streets, was housing 13 renters, three school, and a handful of rooms used as storage by the school district. Joan Malloy’s HeartStrings Studio, was one of the first tenants to move into the building in August of 2001.
