Mabel Nelson, age 88, of River Falls, Wis., died on Thursday, Dec. 13, at Comforts of Home in River Falls.

Mabel M. (Mehrkens) Nelson, age 88, of River Falls, died Thursday, Dec. 13, at Comforts of Home in River Falls.

She was born to Arthur and Lily (Kunde) Mehrkens on Jan. 6, 1924, in Goodhue County, Minn. She completed 8th grade. When she was 18 years old, she married Glenn Nelson on June 27, 1942, at Grace Lutheran Church in Goodhue. They were blessed with four children, Marilyn, Charlene, Karen, and Ronald. Mabel and Glenn moved to River Falls in 1956 and raised their family. In 1978, Mabel and Glenn moved to Webster, Wis., for their retirement years. After Glenn died in 1998, Mabel moved back to River Falls.

Besides raising her family, Mabel had a variety of occupations: farming, machine operator making files at Smead’s, restaurant cooking at Kinnickinnic Café and Yellow Lake Lodge, janitor at UWRF, and sales/stocking clerk at Fox’s Ace Hardware Store. She enjoyed dancing, playing cards, reading, crocheting, and gardening.

Mabel was preceded in death by her parents, Arthur and Lily; her husband, Glenn; infant daughter, Charlene; daughter Marilyn; grandson Brian; son-in-law Jerry; sister, Rosella; brother Luverne; brother-in-law, Palmer; and sisters-in-law, Kay, Donna, and Merle.

She is survived by her daughter Karen Kielas; her son, Ronald (Linda) Nelson; son-in-law Leo “Butch” Rohl; grandchildren Sandra Rohl, Stacy (Justin) Bystrom, Joshua (Sally) Hauge, Timothy Nelson, and Jeremy Nelson; great-grandchildren, Lowein, Tyson, Winston, and Serena Bystrom, Brian and Lilly Johnson, and Laynie Hauge; brothers Earl and Alvin Mehrkens; many nieces and nephews.

A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, Dec. 17, at Ezekiel Lutheran Church in River Falls. Visitation is also Monday from 9-11 a.m. at the church. Interment will be in Our Saviors Lutheran Church Cemetery in Pierce County, Wis.
