Clarence "Bud" Robert Gilbertson, 84, of River Falls, Wis., passed away on Saturday, Sept. 22, in River Falls.
Bud was born on June 8, 1928, to Sern and Elizabeth Gilbertson He attended River Falls elementary schools, Randall, Beldenville, and Forestville, as well as 2 years at River Falls High School, before graduating from Ellsworth High School in 1946.
Following high school, Bud enlisted in the U.S. Navy and served in the Pacific, where his experiences in the remote islands and foreign lands sparked a lifelong interest in travel. Upon discharge from the Navy, he enlisted in the U.S. Air Force, serving in California. Bud was always proud of his country and his service, remaining an active member of the American Legion and serving in several capacities for Post 121 in River Falls.
After his time in the service, Bud built a career in over-the-road trucking, spending 37 years with regional and national trucking firms. When he was able to get away he enjoyed the outdoors - snowmobiling, motorcycling, and camping. After retiring, Bud renewed his interest in travel, enjoying extended trips with his wife, Marianne, to Alaska, Canada, Australia/New Zealand, and Africa. While his military service, work, and travels took him to the far reaches of the world, Bud never lost his roots in rural River Falls and kept his hand in farming his whole life. He also had a great time cheering on the Twins, Vikings, and Badgers.
Bud was preceded in death by his parents and his brothers Lee and Roland.
He is survived by his wife, Marianne; his brother Gary (wife Carol); and his sister Iris "Susie" and sister-in-law Rose; as well as his children: Linda (Tom) Fea, grandchildren Courtney and Christopher; Robert "Bob" (Deb), grandchildren Travis (Eileen) and Rachel (Chris) McDonough, great-grandchild Naomi; Steven (Pat), grandchild Eric (Danielle), great-grandchildren Shalyn, Olivia, Owen, grandchild Marissa (Andy) Westbrook; Sharon (Dan) Dale, grandchildren Jennifer Nelson and Becky (Kevin) Kline, great-grandchildren Callie, Hayden, and Dylan; Cindy (Kevin) Haskins, grandchildren Scott (Carrie), Laura, Sarah, and Alex; Sandra (Tom) Otremba, grandchildren Kerianne (Joel) Bernstein, Kyle (Angela), and Kristopher (Emmy) Otremba; Gary "Butch."
A funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 29, at Luther Memorial Church, 420 S. Fourth St., River Falls, WI 54022. Visitation beginning at 9 a.m.
