Betty Jane Gallagher, age 91, of Janesville, Wis., died on Saturday, July 7, at Cedar Crest Health Center.

She was born on Sept. 26, 1920, in River Falls, Wis., the youngest of ten children born to the late Fred H. and Edna (Pace) Chinnock. Unable to attend public schools in River Falls due to her poor sight, Betty attended sight saving classes in Detroit, Mich., and returned to River Falls to complete her grade school. Betty completed her junior and high school in Janesville at the Wisconsin School for the Visually Handicapped, graduating in 1939. She later attended River Falls Teachers College, obtaining a BS degree in English and secondary education in 1943. Betty continued her education at Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio, receiving her master's degree in social work in 1946.

On August 15, 1949, she married James E. "Everett" Gallagher in River Falls, and he predeceased her on May 9, 2004. After living in Waukesha and Milwaukee for a few years, Betty and her husband moved to Janesville, where they both worked for the Wisconsin School for the Visually Handicapped. Betty taught there for 24 years.

In her free time, Betty enjoyed working in her beautiful flower garden, traveling, crafts, reading, writing, table games, crossword puzzles, and getting together with her "Lunch Bunch" which was a group of women who taught at WSVH.

Betty was a member of Asbury United Methodist Church since its beginning in 1958, Janesville Retired Teachers Association, Badger Association of the Blind in Milwaukee, and the Wisconsin Council of the Blind.

Betty is survived by nieces and nephews. In addition to her husband and parents, she was predeceased by five sisters and four brothers.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, July 18, at Cedar Crest Health Care Chapel. Graveside committal services will be at Greenwood Cemetery in River Falls at 3 p.m. Thursday, July 19.
