Jean E. (nee Kirkvold) Emholtz, age 79, of River Falls, Wis., died Sunday, Feb. 12, at United Hospital, St. Paul.

Jean E. (nee Kirkvold) Emholtz, age 79, of River Falls, Wis., died Sunday, Feb. 12, at United Hospital, St. Paul.

Jean was born on Feb. 21, 1932, in Bemidji, Minn., the daughter of John and Elme (Nelson) Kirkvold.

She lived in Grand Rapids; Park Rapids; Orr, Va.; and Little Fork, Minn. Jean was a graduate of Little Fork High School. In 1950 she moved to Cambridge, Minn. In 1954, she graduated from Gustavus Adophus College at St. Peter, Minn., with a Bachelors of Science degree in elementary education and music. Further education in music was received at UW - River Falls and St. Catherine's in St. Paul.

While at Gustavus, she swam with the Aquatic League and was a member of the student council. Jean also served as Snow Queen and on the homecoming court. In 1953-1954, she was chosen as Miss Cambridge and participated in the Miss Minnesota Pageant.

On Aug. 21, 1954, Jean married Lt. Gerald Emholtz at Cambridge Lutheran Church. Together they lived in Texas and Arizona while Jerry was in the service.

Jean taught school in Anoka and Gaylord, Minn., and substituted in River Falls. She also taught piano lessons for many years.

Jean has been a member of Ezekiel Lutheran Church since 1963, where she taught Sunday school, Vacation Bible School, and was active with the W.E.L.C.A., Lydia Circle, and the senior choir. As an active member of the community, she served as president of the PTA, Cub Scouts leader, and was involved with children's activities. She also sang with the UWRF Music Madams and was the past president of the N.W. Chiropractic Auxiliary and two-time president of the state auxiliary. Jean was an avid bridge player; she was a member of the River Falls Women's Marathon Bridge Club for over 40 years, the Women's Bridge Club, Senior Bridge Club, and River Falls Duplicate Bridge Club for many years.

Jean is survived by her loving husband of 57 years, Jerry of River Falls; three children: Tim (Kathy) Emholtz, Glenwood City, Wis.; Chris (Karen) Emholtz, River Falls; Becky (Joe) Quilit, Niceville, Fla; grandchildren, Karron Emholtz, John Emholtz, Karli Emholtz, Logan Emholtz, Hannah Green, Keilana Quilit; sister, Joyce (Gary) Knoll, Benedict, Minn.

She was preceded in death by her parents and her baby brother, James Earl.

Funeral services for Jean will be 11 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 18, at Ezekiel Lutheran Church, River Falls. Burial will be in the Kinnickinnic Cemetery, River Falls. Visitation will be from 4-8 p.m. Friday at Ezekiel Lutheran Church and for 1 hour prior to services on Saturday. Casketbearers will be Jean's grandchildren.
