George Reed Field, age 82, of River Falls, Wis., beloved husband of Marcella, passed away Feb. 10 after a brave fight against cancer.
Preceded in death by his son William; grandson Shawn; and parents Donald and Lenore Field.
He is survived by his children Mary (John) Taft (Jennifer and Charlie); John (Lora) Field (Justin, Mitchell, Carey, and Haley); Sarah (Rick) Binder (KC, Hannah, Grace, and Matalin); and Tom (Damaris) Field (Zoe, Celia, Manon, and Miriam.) George is also survived by his special brother, Donald (Nancy) Field, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
George was born in La Crosse, Wis. He was always proud of growing up on the north side and his working class background. He graduated from Carleton College in 1950 and his college friends have remained an important part of his life. In 1952, on March 1, he married Marcella Ott, the love of his life. Celebrating 60 years of marriage was an important milestone for him. In 1968, at age 39, he moved to River Falls to be the chancellor and he worked in that capacity for 17 years. His parents both graduated from the university, as did his wife Marcella, sons Williams and John, and granddaughter Carey. He loved the university and was very proud of his life there.
In retirement he loved time with his wife, his coffee groups, his friends and family, and especially following the lives of his grandchildren. He was a wonderful grandfather.
A celebration of his life will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 16, at Ezekiel Lutheran Church, 202 S. 2nd St., River Falls, WI 54022. Tel: 715-425-8294. His celebration will continue with a reception in the Riverview Room at the Union Center, UW-RF. Private interment at Thurston Hill Cemetery, Ellsworth, Wis.
In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to the established George and Marcella Field Scholarship Fund, c/o University of Wisconsin - River Falls Foundation, 310 South Hall, 410 S. Third St., River Falls, WI 54022.

To Marcella and the Field Family, Our deepest sympathy for the loss. We will always remember George at Coyote Coffee solving the world problems with Dave Benson and others! I also started teaching and coaching at UWRF when he was Chancellor. He was the one who allowed the Women's Swim Team to have a record board in Karges Pool! His contributions to the community were many. Jan Tomlinson & Sharon Tansom Cottonwood, ArizonaCottonwood, AZ 02/13/2012 9:56 AM
