Herb Christensen, 89, of Portales, N.M., passed away Saturday morning, Jan. 14, after losing his struggle with a respiratory illness.
He was born to Chris and Mary Christensen of Cottage Grove, Minn., on April 1, 1922, one of two sets of twins in six siblings. On Feb. 10, 1979, he married Carol Green, who preceded him in death in Jan. 1995. After graduating from high school he worked in retail sales most of his life, initially in the Minneapolis area, but moved to River Falls, Wis. in the mid 1960's.
He enjoyed hunting and fishing, woodworking, yard work, card playing, and bird watching. In his day, he was a lot of fun to watch on the dance floor! In River Falls, he was very active in the Methodist Church until he moved to Portales in 2006. In Portales, he could often be seen at True Value or Portales Homes having a coffee shooting the breeze.
He is survived by two sons and their families, Scott and Jane Christensen of Portales, N.M.; Todd and Monica Christensen of Lima, Peru; one stepson and his wife Pat and Paula Green of Hager City, Wis.; two sisters Edith and Richard Nickerson of Medford, Ore. and Ruth and Norman (deceased) Martinson of Bloomington, Minn.; and at least six grandchildren and eight nieces and nephews and their families.
He was preceded in death by his parents; four brothers; his beloved daughter, Ann; his stepchildren Nancy and Mike; and his wife, Carol.
There will be a memorial service at the Portales Methodist Church at 11 a.m. Friday, Jan. 20, in the Fellowship Hall, as well as an additional service in River Falls, Wis. more than likely sometime in May.
He has requested his cremated remains be placed with his wife of 16 years, Carol Green, in the Greenwood Cemetery, River Falls.
Special thanks are due the Bee Hive Staff and the hospice of the Sandias Program.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in the name of Herb Christensen to: First United Methodist Church of Portales, 200 S. Ave. C, Portales, NM 88130 or River Falls United Methodist Church, C/O Christensen Music Fund, 127 S. 2nd St., River Falls, WI 54022-2499.
Arrangements are under the direction of Wheeler Mortuary of Portales, 575-356-4455.
