Catherine Olson and Anthony Markunas

Kids ‘n Kites organizer Catherine Olson stands with kite enthusiast Anthony Markunas at windy Highview Meadows Park just east of the River Falls Golf Course. Markunas, a self-employed remodeling construction worker, said kite enthusiasts in Britain and Italy will also be flying symbolic kites Oct. 7 in solidarity with River Falls. Markunas says everyone, adults and children, respond to the sight of skyward kites: “What’s not to like? For me, it brings a release of tension. Watching the wind take a kite and seeing it rise is relaxing.” Olson said the Oct. 7 event can be a playful experience so people feel able to move beyond this summer’s tragedies.
