The Wildcat girls’ soccer team dropped a 2-1 decision to Kimberly in double overtime Thursday afternoon in a WIAA State Tournament quarterfinal game at Uihlein Soccer Park in Milwaukee.
Sandra Meyer scored the River Falls’ goal at 66:27 to tie the score, 1-1, and after one scoreless ten-minute overtime session, Kimberly’s Marlee Buss scored with 1:35 remaining in the second overtime to give the Papermakers the victory.
River Falls outshot Kimberly, 12-11, but had just two shots on goal compared to four for the Papermakers. Wildcat goalkeeper Page Meyer finished with two saves, both in the second half, to keep the score tied through regulation.
The two goals scored by Kimberly are twice as many as the Wildcats allowed all season. They entered the state tournament outscoring their opponents 85-1 while compiling a record of 20-0-1.
The loss was the first of the season for the Cats, who were making their first-ever appearance at state. River Falls ends the year with a record of 20-1-1 while Kimberly improved to 21-5-1 and will face either Madison Memorial (17-5-5) or Appleton North (21-0) in a state semifinal game Friday at 6 p.m.
