Some 850 young soccer players took part in the May 21-22 weekend River Falls Wildcat Invitational tournament hosted by River Falls Wildcat Soccer. This is the 28th year the local traveling soccer association has hosted a major tournament in River Ralls.
A total of 62 Minnesota and Wisconsin teams -- 42 girls teams and 20 boys – who ranged in age from nine to 16 competed and also battled the elements.
On Saturday, May 21, the teams played through drenching rain. For the most part the fields held up.
On Sunday, May 22, the rainy weather deteriorated. Play was delayed twice for an hour and a half because of lightning and hail, but no games were canceled.
The tournament finished on time at 3:30 p.m. Sunday.
“I believe the tournament was very successful, not only the competitive spirit but for the business it brought to the community,” said Wildcat Invitational tournament director Vahan Badalow. “I’m basing this comment from the positive feedback received from numerous coaches, parents and players.
“I would like to thank all the volunteers and River Falls Wildcat Soccer board members, because without all their efforts, time and support, this tournament would not have been possible.”
These are the River Falls soccer teams who shined in the stormy tournament: U-13 boys, second place; U-14 boys, first place; U-16 boys, second place; U-13 girls, first place.
