A University-of-Minnesota student from Appleton died April 21, six days after he and two female students were struck by a hit-and-run driver. The Hennepin County Medical Center said 23-year-old Benjamin Van Handel died with family and friends by his side.

A hospital spokeswoman said Van Handel’s organs would be donated so quote, “other families will not have to say goodbye to their loved ones.” Minneapolis Police said the car was going about 30-miles-an-hour when it jumped onto a sidewalk, and struck Van Handel and the other two students before driving away.

Van Handel suffered a severe brain injury and broken bones, while the others escaped with minor injuries. The mishap occurred early April 15 in the Dinkytown business district close to the Minnesota campus. Police are still looking for the hit-and-run driver.
