A Madison man reportedly told police that he kept a large amount of marijuana in his home because he needs it for his health, and he denied selling it. Richard Braun, 62, and his 60-year-old wife Barbara are due in Dane County Circuit Court Feb. 24.
They were charged Feb. 22 with possessing marijuana with the intent to deliver, manufacturing pot, and maintaining a drug house.
Their home was raided last month and police found 166 marijuana plants, along with 4.5 pounds of packaged drugs and $17,000 cash. Prosecutors quoted Richard Braun as saying he needed the marijuana to help him sleep and to settle his stomach, but he did not have a medical recommendation for the drug.
State legislators have long considered letting Wisconsinites use pot for medicinal purposes. But Democratic supporters failed to get the bill passed in the last session, when their party controlled the Legislature and the governor’s office.
A search warrant said officers began to investigate Braun after he was seen throwing away garbage bags with marijuana leaves. The warrant said officers searched the trash three times since the beginning of December.
