An anti-gay protest group failed to show at a play at Neenah High School during the weekend, leaving a crowd of 100 counter protestors to declare victory.

The Westboro Baptist Church of Topeka, Kan., known for its protests at military funerals, announced plans to protest the performance of “The Laramie Project,” about the 1988 murder of a gay college student in Wyoming. Counter-protestor carried signs about love and tolerance.

When the church didn’t show up, the others hugged each other and broke into a chorus of the song, “We Are the Champions.” Westboro did not explain why they were a no-show at the play in Neenah.

High school principal Colleen Doyle said she was encouraged by the strong support for a play that teaches about tolerance and encourages youngsters to speak out against hate crimes.
