Swimmers send 7 to state; wrestlers advance 11 to sectional

The Wildcat boys swimming and diving team will be represented in seven events at Friday’s WIAA State Championship Meet after placing second at last Saturday’s sectional in Stevens Point, while 11 Wildcat wrestlers advanced to this weekend’s sectional tournament.

The Wildcat boys swimming and diving team will be represented in seven events at Friday’s WIAA State Championship Meet after placing second at last Saturday’s sectional in Stevens Point, while 11 Wildcat wrestlers advanced to this weekend’s sectional tournament.

Senior Tim Weller will compete in four events at state. Weller finished second in the 200 yard individual medley and fourth in the 100 yard backstroke Saturday. He also teamed up with junior Shamus Maloney, freshman Tom Ramquist and senior Andy Yelken to win a sectional title in the 200 yard freestyle relay, and combined with senior Dan Schraufnagel, Yelken and freshman Alex Haskins for a second place finish in the 200 medley relay.

Yelken will also compete in the 100 butterfly after winning the sectional title Saturday while Schraufnagel took second in the 100 breaststroke to advance.

Sophomore Thomas Baldini also earned a trip to state after finishing fourth in diving.

The WIAA Division 2 State Swimming and Diving Championships get underway with diving at 2:30 p.m. Friday at the University of Wisconsin Natatorium in Madison. Swimming competition will begin at 6:30 p.m.

In other postseason action, the Wildcat wrestling team had two individual champions and 11 sectional qualifiers from Saturday’s New Richmond Regional.

Logan Cudd and Adam Figi earned regional titles while Matt Linehan and Nick Johnson placed second. Nathan Kinneman, Zach Radkey-Pechacek, Briar Tepp and Tyson Bystrom all finished third while Michael Wolff, Erik Dartsch and Riley Larson placed fourth to advance.

The WIAA Sectional Tournament will be held Saturday in Marshfield beginning at 10 a.m.
