At approximately 7 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 7, a neighbor saw smoke coming from the three-season porch of his neighbor, Erik Bergmanis, 314 Meadow Ridge Ct., in the town of Troy. He went to the house and woke the occupants up. Bergmanis and his two children were able to get out safely.

Bergmanis and his neighbors put water on the fire with garden hoses which knocked the fire down enough to keep it from spreading out of control before the fire department arrived.

The fire appeared to have started on the floor and was burning up to the ceiling next to a fireplace when spotted, according to Assistant Fire Chief Mike Moody. The fire also burned through the porch floor.

Bergmanis said he hasn't had a fire in the fireplace for several weeks but had treated some wood in the porch last night with linseed oil. He left a Tupperware container with a small amount of oil and the rag he used on the floor next to the fireplace.

Roughly 30 firefighters from River Falls, Hudson and Roberts responded and were on the scene for about 1-1/2 hours.
