Aquatic ecologist Robert DuBois says dragonflies migrated north earlier this year in order to reproduce. Now nymphs are emerging to return to the south.
That means people are seeing dragonflies in huge numbers up and down Lake Michigan. DuBois says weather and migration patterns are both playing a role.
Heavy rains helped bring many insects, including mosquitoes. Dragonflies eat those insects , which also contributes to their growing numbers.
Also, wind patterns seem to have forced more of the dragonflies onto the shoreline than usual.
