Seven River Falls wrestlers competed this summer as part of the Wisconsin National Team.
Adam Figi was selected to wrestle as a member of the Wisconsin Junior National Dual Team that won a national title in Greco-Roman and placed fourth in Freestyle. Figi split time at his weight class, finishing with records of 1-1 in Greco-Roman and 3-1 in Freestyle.
Six other wrestlers qualified for and competed in the USA Wrestling Junior and Cadet National last week in Fargo, N.D., as part of the Wisconsin National Team. The tournament is the nation’s largest, with over 3,000 high school-age competitors from 46 states.
Logan Cudd and Cam Loomis competed in Junior Greco-Roman with Cudd going 2-2 in the tournament and Loomis 0-2.
Tyson Bystrom and Matt Linehan competed in Junior Freestyle and each went 0-2, while Nathan Kinneman and Briar Tepp both went 0-2 in Cadet Freestyle.
Prior to wrestling in Fargo, the athletes completed a four-day training camp held in River Falls with 160 of the best high school-age wrestlers from all over Wisconsin.
High school coach Brady Cudd said all the wrestlers gained valuable experience this summer.
“Last week we had half our varsity team training and competing at a national tournament,” he noted. “That’s going to be huge for those kids, and for our team, next wrestling season.”
Six of the seven wrestlers will return to the Wildcat varsity next season. Loomis, who graduated in 2010, will attend UW-Whitewater as a member of the Warhawk wrestling team and will be roommates with former rival Zach Gillis of St. Croix Central.
