The River Falls Area Hospital Foundation’s recent scholarship awards will help two local non-traditional students pursue their studies in health care.
Scholarships of $500 were awarded to Nanci Hanna-Hammond, who is working towards a degree in respiratory therapy, and Kelly Vaught, who is working towards a degree in nursing. Both recipients live in River Falls and are students at the Chippewa Valley Technical College.
“We know that the cost of education can be a barrier, especially for students who start their schooling later in life,” said Heather Logelin, executive director of the foundation. “They often have families to support and other significant financial obligations. The recipients of these most recent scholarships are all very committed to providing high-quality health care in Western Wisconsin. We are proud to be helping them pursue their dreams, and hope our scholarship program encourages more people from our region to consider careers in health care.”
The goal of the foundation’s Health Careers Scholarship Program for Non-Traditional Students is to increase the number of health care providers practicing in the region served by the Foundation. To be eligible for a scholarship, a student must live or work in the region served by the Foundation and be accepted or enrolled in an accredited program.
Applicants must have at least one year of work experience after high school; applications from high school seniors are not to be considered. Preference is given to applicants who (1) are pursuing degrees that meet an identified provider shortage in the region and (2) have a demonstrated commitment to practice in the region.
Other factors that will favorably influence selection include a work history in a hospital, clinic or other medical setting; demonstrated financial need; and demonstrated potential for academic success.
Scholarship applications are reviewed twice each year. The next deadline is March 30. Application forms are available online at www.riverfallsareahospital.com/rfahfoundation.
The River Falls Area Hospital Foundation, formerly the Kinnickinnic Health Foundation, was established in 1978 to raise funds for River Falls Area Hospital and other local health initiatives.
