In River Falls, break-ins can be handled with civility

It was almost 3 a.m. New Year’s Day. An 82-year-old woman woke to noises and lights turned on in her house in the 1300 block of South Main Street. She called out but there was no answer. So she got out of bed and found a young man standing in her bathroom.

Why are you here? she asked the man who seemed drunk.

He replied that a lady had told him to come stay in the house.

No, said the elderly woman, you’re mistaken and must leave.

The young man said OK he would go.

Because it was very cold outside, the woman reminded him to first put on his shoes, socks, coat, gloves and hat before leaving.

He did that and was soon gone.

The woman later found that her young intruder had broken through a service door in the garage. Once inside, he found a package of donuts on a table. He opened the package and snacked on the sweets before moving on inside the house.

The suspect is described as five feet eight, blond, between 25 and 30 years old.
