Please help: Sharing Families needs sponsors, donations

The good news: Two weeks into the program, about half the families the Sharing Families project has committed to helping this holiday season have sponsors.

The good news: Two weeks into the program, about half the families the Sharing Families project has committed to helping this holiday season have sponsors.

The not-so-good news: With only a little over two weeks to go, half the families still need sponsors, and a company whose employees “adopted” several families last year can take only three this season.

Each year Sharing Families commits to help 50 needy local families, buying Christmas gifts, warm clothing and food for children, moms and dads in our community.

The goal is to have all families sponsored by the first week in December — but it doesn’t look like that will happen this year.

In short, the project needs your help. Last year, work groups sponsored 28 families, civic organizations “adopted” 13, and other families or individuals took 10.

Sharing Families organizers ask workplace friends, civic group members and families to accept the challenge of helping a family in need.

While sponsoring a family does take money and a little time, it doesn’t have to be an overwhelming challenge.

Cash donations received by the program will be used to buy food gift certificates and packages for the families and can be used to help buy more expensive items such as coats and boots.

These are some of the families waiting for help:

  • A mom and dad with two little boys and a pre-school girl.

  • A woman with two elementary school children.

  • A mother with a teenager and a younger son.

  • A mom with one child, a teenage daughter.

  • Parents with a pre-school boy and two elementary school children.

  • A mother with two teenagers and two younger children.

  • A mom and dad with children ages seven, five and three.

  • Parents with two little kids and a baby.

    Many ways to help

    Persons willing to help may:

  • Make a donation of money to buy food, toys and clothing. (No cash will be given to families.)

  • Sponsor a child or family by buying the items they have requested. Those who decide to do that are asked to call Vera Roy-Stoeberl at 426-1046 or Judy Wiff at 426-1049.

  • Cash donations may be mailed to Sharing Families, P.O. Box 701, River Falls, WI 54022; dropped off at a participating bank; or brought to the Journal office between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. weekdays.
