Tom Steffen and Friends comedy show back for third year

A big night of live stand-up comedy is returning to River Falls for a third year.

A big night of live stand-up comedy is returning to River Falls for a third year.

Twin cities-based professional comedian Tom Steffen, a 1983 River Falls High School grad, is bringing his comedy act, and some of his friends, back to the high school auditorium at 7 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 20.

As in the past two years, Steffen is happy to be coming home to perform. “The venue and audiences have been so good the past two years, and the band boosters, directors and band members have been so great to work with. I’ve really talked it up to the area comedians, which makes it easy to book the show because they all want to do it. I already have requests in for the next couple of years.”

This year’s line-up:

  • Tom Steffen — Performed this year at the 2009 CBC Winnipeg Comedy Festival, including a taping for an upcoming appearance on the CBC network in Canada, and the 2009 Great American Comedy Festival at the Johnny Carson Theatre in Norfolk, Neb.

  • Shannan Paul — Is an on-air personality on B96 in the Twin Cities, and spent several years on the station’s “Tone E Fly morning show.” She also performs regularly at clubs and shows around the Midwest.

  • Mike Brody — Performed at the 2008 convention for the SciFi Channel’s “Ghost Hunters” show, and was the host of “The Buzz by Cheapo” on the CW affiliate in the Twin Cities.

  • Tim Harmston — Back for a third year, Tim has been seen on NBC’s “Last Comic Standing,” performed at the 2009 Great American Comedy Festival, and will be appearing on the upcoming season of Comedy Central’s “Live at Gotham.”

  • Darlene Westgor — Was the winner of Nick at Nite’s “Funniest Mom in America” in 2007, and has appeared on NBC’s “Last Comic Standing,” and performed at the 2009 Great American Comedy Festival.

Admission is $10 for adults, $5 for students, and benefits the River Falls High School Band Boosters. The show is expected to last around two hours, with a brief intermission, during which concessions will be available.

Again this year, Steffen rates the show at a PG-13.

“Just like the last two years, there’s nothing off-color about the show that results in my rating suggestion. It’s more that stand-up comedy is written for adults. To anyone under a certain age, it’s just someone up there talking, which isn’t all that entertaining if you don’t relate to the material.”

Advance tickets can be purchased at The Dish and the Spoon Café on Main Street, by contacting Tom’s parents, John and Kathy Steffen, at 425-6982, or Jaci Zimmerman at 715-222-5373. Tickets will also be available at the door.
