Paul Robert Cudd, Sr. “Grandad”, 86, of River Falls, passed away on Thursday, Aug. 27, 2009, at River Falls Area Hospital surrounded by his family.
Paul was born on May 6, 1923 in Barronett, to John Huntley Cudd and Hannah Louise (Johnson) Cudd.
Paul grew up on the family farm in Beldenville, with his eight brothers and sisters. He left school after the 8th grade to work on the family farm.
Paul enlisted in the Armed Forces in 1942 and became a member of Company F 511th Parachute Infantry in the U.S. Army. He served overseas and was honorably discharged in 1946.
Paul was united in marriage to Janet Katherine Wells on Thanksgiving Day, Nov. 25, 1948. To this union seven children were born.
When first married, Paul farmed with his father, and in 1951 he traded 18 cows for his first Caterpillar, which began his 34 years in his excavating business, Paul Cudd & Sons.
In 1967 Paul developed Cudd’s Mobile Home Court. Soon to follow was his first “potty pumper” purchase.
Grandad’s greatest joys in life were his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. He was a huge fan of their athletic activities, plus local sports teams: the Wildcats, Falcons, Packers, and the Minnesota Twins.
Paul was a 59-year member of Ezekiel Lutheran Church, Lion’s Club, Moose, and River Falls Emergency Corp, a 55-year member of the American Legion, and a long-time Cubmaster for Cub Scout Pack 54.
Paul loved spending winters at his home in Florida. He also enjoyed his fishing trips to Canada and Alaska, trimming and cutting down trees, and mowing lawn. Paul spent many hours at the ballpark that he constructed right out his front door, which benefited the River Falls softball leagues.
Paul is survived by Janet, his wife of 60 years; his children: Randy (Vonnie) Cudd, Jeff (Mary Field) Cudd, Pauly (Debbie) Cudd, Roxanne (Bob) Kolashinski, Jill (Mark) Sutter, Penny (Todd) Keith, and Jana (Randy) Feyereisen; his grandchildren: Aaron Cudd, Sara (Aaron) Curti, Adam (Mara) Cudd, Gina (Casey) Byron, Jeremy (Kristan) Cudd, Isaac Cudd, Jennifer (Jeff) Edling, Josh (Jena) Cudd, Joe Cudd, Jamie (Todd) Hindahl, Courtney, Meghan, Ali, and Luke Sutter, Sophie and Karli Keith, Jeremy (Meg) Jorgenson, Tessa and JP Feyereisen; great-grandchildren: Michael and Marcus Cudd, Annabelle and Austin Curti, Evan, Jonah and Claudia Byron, Jordyn and Jakob Edling, Cole, Sawyer, Hannah and Maggie Cudd, Andon and Tyler Hindahl; sister, Arlene Hilden; brothers, John (Dorothy) Cudd and Gene Cudd; sisters-in-law: Connie Cudd, Dorothy Cudd, Romaine Cudd Schone, Marion Dunn, and Elaine Wells; brother-in-law Darrell (Toby) Wells, and many other relatives and friends.
Paul was preceded in death by his parents, brothers and sisters: Helen (Len) Bitterman, Walter (Betty) Cudd, Alice (Lawrence) Johnson, Herb Cudd, and Tom Cudd; and sister-in-law Clarice Cudd.
Funeral service was held 11 a.m. Monday, Aug. 31, at Ezekiel Lutheran Church.
Visitation was held Sunday, Aug. 30, from 4-8 p.m. and one hour prior to the service at the church.
Memorials may be given to Ezekiel Lutheran Church or the River Falls High School Wildcat Athletics/Grandad Fund.
Cashman-Hill Home & Cremation Services in River Falls assisted the family with arrangements.
