Died Aug. 16, 2009
Michael Joseph O’Brien, 53, of Hudson, beloved father, husband, brother, and son, passed away on Sunday, Aug. 16, 2009, at his home in Hudson, surrounded by his family.
Mike was born the son of Judge Thomas J. and Elizabeth (Dodge) O’Brien on Sept. 4, 1955. He was a member of the Hudson High School class of 1974.
Michael and Mary V. Stepan were married on March 19, 1983, at the Carmelite Monastery in Hudson. They were blessed with three children.
Mike worked as an insert specialist/plant ambassador at St. Croix Press, Inc. in New Richmond for many years. Mike traveled abroad extensively in Europe, the Mediterranean, and the Caribbean.
He especially loved the family trip he took to Ireland in 2005 with his brothers and sister and sister-in-law Theresa (who let them have fun, but not TOO much fun!). Whether on TV or in the stands, Mike was an avid “Wisconsin” fan, spending time watching the Badgers, Brewers, Packers, and Bucks.
Mike was team captain of the Sharp Ones for years, a Wednesday night men’s bowling league team at the Hudson Bowling Center. He also enjoyed playing baseball and softball when he was younger. Mike was a former member of the local Knights of Columbus. Mike considered himself a connoisseur of fine beer, enjoying brews from around the world.
Another favorite pastime was the time he spent with his brothers singing in their men’s vocal group, The O’Brien’s.
But his greatest joy was being a part of his children’s lives and watching them grow into good and decent young people. He was very proud of their accomplishments.
Mike was preceded in death by his grandparents: Thomas and Martha O’Brien, and Everett and Anne Dodge, and his mother-in-law Ruth Stepan.
Mike will always remain in the hearts of his wife of 26 years, Mary; his children: Martha, Michael Jr., and Maggie; parents, Thomas and Elizabeth; sister, Ann; six brothers: Thomas Jr., Patrick (Theresa), Tim (Ellen), Dan (Kathy), Chris (Paula), and Sean (Cathy); his Stepan family, many nieces, nephews, extended family and friends.
In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred.
The remaining members of The O’Briens will celebrate the life of Michael by providing music he chose for a Mass of Christian Burial at 11 a.m. on Thursday, Aug. 20, at St. Patrick Catholic Church in Hudson.
Interment will follow in St. Patrick’s Cemetery.
Visitation will be one hour prior to Holy Mass at church on Thursday and on Wednesday, Aug. 19, from 4-8 p.m., ending with a prayer service at the O’Connell Family Funeral Home in Hudson, 715.386.3725. www.oconnellfuneralhomes.com
