Barrett spoke for the first time about being attacked while he tried to help a woman near the Wisconsin State Fair last weekend.
He says things got very ugly, very quickly when the man started hitting him with a pipe.
Barrett spoke in his front yard, with his hand bandaged heavily and cuts obvious on his face.
The mayor's assailant could be charged Friday.
Molly Barrett-Flood called 911 for help when the suspect started his her uncle with a metal pipe.
