Local wrestlers compete in national championships

Eight River Falls High School wrestlers wrestled for Team Wisconsin at the ASICS/Vaughan National Wrestling Championships July 18-25 at the FargoDome in Fargo, N.D.

The tournament featured both Greco-Roman and Freestyle competition for both Cadet (wrestlers born in 1993-94) and Junior (1992 and earlier) divisions.

In Freestyle action, Peter Wolff (Junior, 119 pounds), Cam Loomis (Junior, 145), Nathan Kinneman (Cadet, 98) and Tyson Bystrom (Cadet, 189) participated. In Greco-Roman competition, Wolff, Logan Cudd (Junior, 125), Loomis, Sam Johnson (Junior, 189), Josh Kinneman (Junior 215) and Adam Figi (Cadet, 160), took part.

In Freestyle and Greco-Roman, each state may enter a maximum of 45 wrestlers in each style and a maximum of four wrestlers in any one weight class, per style. Forty-six states were represented at the tournament.

The Wisconsin Cadet Greco-Roman team beat out Minnesota for first place, while the Wisconsin Junior Greco-Roman team placed seventh, with Illinois taking first. In Freestyle competition, the Wisconsin Cadets finished 10th while the Juniors placed ninth.

Many of the Wisconsin and Minnesota team members have trained at Kevin Black’s Victory School of Wrestling in River Falls. The training camp and staging area for the entire Wisconsin team was held in River Falls this summer.
