The latest models of all-terrain vehicles could use Wisconsin state trails under a new bill in Madison.

Three lawmakers proposed the measure, after learning that many 2009 models are too wide under the state’s current limits.

Only ATVs which are 48-inches wide are allowed on state trails.

But many newer models are 50-inches wide, to make them more stable.

Rep. Ann Hraychuck, D-Balsam Lake, says owners of the new machines have complained because they can only use their vehicles on private land.

She said it would bring more recreational income to the state by expanding the limits.

Scott Suder, R-Abbotsford, is co-sponsoring the Assembly bill.

Sen. Jim Holperin, D-Eagle River, a former state tourism secretary, is sponsoring the measure in his chamber.
