Party starts this week

Don those sombreros and get ready for this year’s River Falls Days, Fiesta de la Kinni. The annual festival offers food and fun for all ages. Though most activities take place downtown near the intersection of Locust and Second streets, people will find fun events all over town.

A few highlights.

Wednesday

  • 4:30-7 p.m., watch or join the Mudfest at 1374 N. Main St.

    Thursday

    Food and beer vendors open 5:30-10 p.m.; the carnival opens 4-11 p.m.

  • 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., get a free infant car-seat check at the ambulance station, 175 E. Cedar St.

  • 4-8 p.m., peruse local art at 120 N. Main St.

  • 7-11 p.m., climb aboard a mechanical bull

  • 7 p.m., catch a little motor mania at the truck pull in the north-end industrial park

  • 7 p.m., see the River Falls Royal Ambassadors competition at the high school

  • 7:30 p.m., compete in or watch the second annual bean burrito eating contest

  • 8 p.m.-midnight, join in the free street dance featuring live music by High Noon.

    People can also sign up for a three-on-three basketball or disc-golf tournament.

    Friday

    Food vendors open 11 a.m. to 1 a.m.(Sat.); the beer garden opens at 5 p.m. Carnival hours are from noon to 1 a.m. (Sat.)

    Sports opportunities include Legion baseball and a men’s softball tournament with games and fun all day.

  • 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., Main Street and Riverwalk merchant sale

  • 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., join in Marble Mania

  • Noon-2 p.m., play Bingo

  • Noon-3 p.m., see locals go under in the dunk tank

  • 1-4 p.m., sing in or hear the youth karaoke contest

  • 4-9 p.m., break bread at the community dinner, 127 Second St.

  • 5 p.m., get a root beer float at the ambulance station, 175 E. Cedar St.

  • 5 p.m., watch pastors race on tricycles

  • 6:30 p.m., stake a spot early to watch the River Falls Days parade

  • 9-11 p.m., teens can strut their stuff at a dance for their age group

  • 9:15 p.m. to 1 a.m., listen to live music by Hairball.

    Saturday

    Visitors can start buying food at 11 a.m. and beer at 2 p.m. The carnival opens at 10 a.m. A race and fun walk begin early in Glen Park and people can sign up for a number of other physical fun: Softball, baseball, wrestling, water fights, ultimate Frisbee and darts.

  • 8 a.m. to noon, shop the Farmer’s Market for fresh locally grown foods

  • 8 a.m. to 3 p.m., check out hot rods and muscle cars at 709 Main St.

  • 10 a.m. to noon, see creatures at the petting zoo and join YMCA activities.

  • 10:30 a.m., watch the kiddie parade, costumes and all

  • Noon-6 p.m., grab some pint-sized fun in the children’s entertainment area

  • 12:30 p.m., see a different kids’ show every hour under the big tent

  • 3-6 p.m., join a family corn roast at 1374 N. Main St., First Covenant Church

  • 6:30 p.m., hear the roar of hot-rod tractors in the north-end industrial park

  • 6 p.m. to 1:30 a.m., enjoy live music by Shirts and Skins and Brat Pack Radio.

    Sunday

    Fiesta visitors can take part in a 10 a.m. worship service under the big tent, watch or play in the men’s softball or Legion baseball tournaments and get in on the ultimate Frisbee games.

    The carnival opens at 10 a.m., and a garden-tractor pull begins at noon in the north-end industrial park.

  • Noon-4 p.m., hourly piñata busting until 4 p.m. at 120 N. Main St. and pony rides on Riverwalk St. until 2 p.m.

  • Noon-3 p.m., help judge the salsa and Mexican dip contest in Veterans Park

  • Dusk, don’t miss the fireworks display in Hoffman Park.

    General events

    Many treasure seekers will hunt for the famous medallion to win this year’s $200 cash prize ($250 if the winner bought a festival button).

    At the public library, 140 Union St., see a flower show Thursday-Saturday or check out the artistic display that illustrates River Falls history.

    Browse the citywide garage sale multiple days or check out downtown specials Friday and Saturday.
