Black smoke and the smell of burning rubber filled the air around 8 a.m. Wednesday morning as flames consumed a red, 1998 Chevrolet Blazer parked on the east side of Hwy. 12 just north of I-94 at exit 4.

Driver Michael G. Atwood, 44, of New Richmond, told a St. Croix County sheriff’s deputy that he pulled to the side of the highway when the vehicle overheated, and that it burst into flames moments later. Traffic on Hwy. 12 was stopped while firefighters from the Hudson and Roberts-Warren departments put out the fire.

A St. Croix County Sheriff’s Deputy arrived at the scene first, blocking cars from moving northbound on Hwy. 12 and from turning that way from the I-94 exit ramp.

Firefighters from Hudson and Roberts Warren arrived within minutes and quickly extinguished the fire.
