River Falls residents Heath and Angela Tille welcomed five new members of the family June 19. Big sister, 18-month-old Meredith, now has four sisters and a brother: Brooklyn Elizabeth, Emma Nicole, Laruen Olivia, Madeline Paige and Alex Michael.

Dad Heath said Monday morning that mother and babies are doing fine – she at Abbott Northwestern Hospital in Minneapolis, they at the adjacent-but-unrelated facility, Children’s Hospital.

With a flood of emotions including relief, their parents counted all 50 fingers and toes. Heath said the quintuplets, all weighing more than two pounds, are in the hospital’s neonatal intensive care unit.

Technically they’re listed as critical, but Dad says that’s just because they were premature – born just shy of 30 weeks’ gestation. Doctors tell the Tilles their “quints” are healthy and doing well.

Their parents can visit them anytime they like but haven’t gotten to hold any of them yet. Heath said three of the babies, possibly a fourth today, have begun intervals of breathing on their own without a breathing mask to help.

Heath and Angela thought ahead, color coding the tiny knit caps that the hospital gives babies so they’d know who is who.

Angela delivered the babies via cesarean section Friday between 10:29 and 10:32. Heath said the hospital took each baby to a second room – expanding the area to accommodate five babies.

He said medical staff spent about 15 minutes cleaning the babies and checking their vitals before wheeling them off to the NICU. Heath said Angela is sore and moving slowly, but doing well and able to walk around. She may get to come home as early as Tuesday this week.

The babies, said their father, will be in the hospital for at least another two months.
