The largest class of kindergartners in more than a decade is poised to enter the River Falls School District for the 2009-10 year.
Personnel Director Donna Hill said 229 children registered for school at the annual March kindergarten roundup. Hill said that number has since risen to 240.
The district has kindergarten classes at Greenwood, Westside, Rocky Branch and the Montessori program at River Falls Academy.
In order to keep class sizes within district guidelines, the school board Monday night gave the green light for administrators to hire another kindergarten teacher.
A final hiring decision is a month away. At that time there should be a better grasp of overall kindergarten enrollment.
Hill said if another kindergarten teacher was hired, it would be for Westside Elementary. Westside, with three kindergarten teachers, so far has 85 registered students.
Hill said Westside has an extra available classroom.
