Three taken in by police for marijuana possession

One started out as a man giving the finger to a patrol officer and passing Main Street traffic; another was discovered because of the smell of pot coming from a college dorm room; the third was because a mother found a baggie of pot under her 16-year-old son’s bed. The two adults face drug charges by the district attorney. The 16-year-old’s case will be handled in juvenile court.

In the first, River Falls police stopped to confront a 24-year-old local man for giving the finger in public on busy South Main Street Sunday at 6:15 p.m. The man was said to be confrontational, intoxicated and had to be forcibly handcuffed.

During a search officers claim they recovered a bag of marijuana on the man who was out on bond for a prior offense. The man was later taken to county jail in Ellsworth.

Police also took an 18-year-old UW-RF student to jail for marijuana and drug paraphernalia possession Friday at 2:20 a.m. The student was in his dorm room at Hathorn Hall with two other male students. There, officers say they recovered a jar with nearly 267 grams of pot, glass pipe with residue, rolling papers, and a metal cylinder for crushing marijuana.

The college student was taken to county jail. His mother in Coon Rapids, Minn., was called to come bail him out. Charges are pending with the district attorney.

And Friday afternoon, a mother in the 200 block of North Eighth Street, phoned police to say she’d found marijuana in her son’s bedroom. When he got home from school the boy was arrested. Next day he was reported as a runaway but caught in the city and returned home.

Recently police also:

  • Arrested a 24-year-old UW-RF female student for shoplifting at ShopKo. The student, a Chinese citizen, was arrested for allegedly trying to steal a ring and hoop earrings.

  • Arrested after a foot chase a 24-year-old local man for public urination in someone’s backyard in the 500 block of North Fremont Street Saturday at 12:50 p.m. The man was with his dog and also allegedly had an open bottle of vodka. He tossed the booze bottle before running. After being caught and given fines, the man, described as intoxicated, was driven to his mother’s home in River Falls. She promised to look after him.

  • Are investigating vandalism to a stone bench near the north side entrance to St. Bridget Catholic Church. The bench was broken Friday night. Skateboarders in the area may be the culprits.

  • Are attempting to locate two young male suspects who tried pumping gas illegally at Dick’s Hometown Liquor, 1141 S. Main St., around 2:05 a.m. Saturday. At that hour the business was closed. One suspect tried to access a pump with a credit card, then set the nozzle to run at maximum before laying it on the pavement. The suspect then fled. Luckily, no gas was discharged.
