The St. Croix Valley Fusion girls’ hockey team, which includes high school girls from River Falls, Spring Valley, St. Croix Central and Baldwin -- won its first ever state championship on Saturday by defeating Fond Du Lac/Waupun Warbirds 10-4 at the Alliant Energy Center. The St. Croix Valley Fusion girls’ hockey team, which includes high school girls from River Falls, Spring Valley, St. Croix Central and Baldwin -- won its first ever state championship on Saturday by defeating Fond Du Lac/Waupun Warbirds 10-4 at the Alliant Energy Center.
The Fusion is the first undefeated state champion in girls’ hockey history. They finished the 2008-09 season with a record of 23-0-1.
Lily Cranston had a hat trick and Hailey Rock had two goals and two assists while Alice Cranston and Tara Frey scored two goals each and Karlyn Sturtevant added one. Tanis Klingler finished with five assists and Nikki Plunkett had three.
Fusion goaltender Devin Roen made 15 saves as the Fusion outshot the Warbirds, 40-19.
The score was tied, 1-1, at the end of the first period before the Fusion erupted for five goals in the second period, three by Lily Cranston, to take a 6-2 lead.
