Weekend roundup: Eight swimmers to state; eight wrestlers to sectional

Eric Emerson won Saturday’s 100 yard freestyle sectional championship and Roland Pomfret took home the 500 freestyle title at the Stevens Point sectional to headline a group of four Wildcat individuals and two relay teams that qualified for this weekend’s WIAA State Swimming and Diving Championships in Madison.

Emerson will compete at state in three events—the 100 freestyle, 50 freestyle and as the anchor on the Cats’ 400 freestyle relay team—while Pomfret qualified in two events—the 500 freestyle and as a member of the 400 freestyle relay team. Mason Saari and Andrew Yelken will round out the Cats’ 400 freestyle relay squad.

Tim Weller qualified for state in the 100 backstroke and as a member of the Cats’ 200 medley relay team along with Troy Veith, Yelken and Navid Rahgozar. Diver Ben Lowery will round out the contingent of Wildcats at the state meet.

In regional wrestling action Saturday in Eau Claire, Logan Cudd (119), Cam Loomis (135), Josh Kinneman (171) and Sam Johnson (189) all won championships while Peter Wolff (103), Austin Johnson (130) and Adam Figi (145) took second and Trevor Ross (215) finished fourth. All eight advanced to this Saturday’s sectional tournament in Marshfield.

The Wildcat Wrestling Booster Club is sponsoring a fan bus to the sectional tournament. Cost will be no more than $25 per person round trip, excluding food and admission. If interested, contact Carlos Figi at cfigi@pressenter.com or (715) 425-5939.

In other local sports action from Saturday, the St. Croix Valley Fusion girls’ hockey team got goals from seven different players to wrap up the regular season with a 7-0 victory over Stevens Point/Wisconsin Rapids. The Fusion completed their second undefeated season in a row with a record of 19-0-1.

In boys’ hockey action, Jackson Rohde had three goals to help the Wildcats end their regular season with an 11-3 victory over Eau Claire North.

And in girls’ basketball action, Tessa Wells and Emma Purfeerst had 17 points each to lead the Wildcats to a 58-47 win over Rice Lake.
