Letter: Revisionists need a reality check

There have been a few letters recently attempting to reshape history and give Bush a somewhat acceptable legacy. To my mind, Bush has been the worst president in living memory.

The main elements of Bush’s legacy as I see it are:

  • Making torture a standard practice for U.S. interrogations. Torture is unacceptable under any circumstances, and Bush’s support for this created millions of enemies for our country.

  • The illegal and unnecessary invasion of Iraq on plainly false charges. This has cost thousands of U.S. soldiers’ lives and hundreds of thousands of Iraqi lives, and again has created millions of enemies for us.

  • Turning a budget surplus from Clinton into a trillion-dollar deficit, and doubling our national debt from $5 trillion to over $10 trillion.

These actions alone have severely damaged our country and weakened us abroad. They leave us now in a poor position as we set about the recovery process.

We are never safer when we create millions of new enemies , and it will take us many years to now rebuild our relationships throughout the world.

The sooner we can close the book on this phase of our history, the better.
