A roaming dog that was struck by a car Monday while crossing the Hwy. 35/65 bypass is scheduled to have surgery today (Friday) at the University of Minnesota small animal hospital. Amazingly, more than $5,000 has been raised by private donors to foot the bill. One man gave $1,000. The dog’s owner has yet to been found.
The one-year-old female dog is a Lab/Shepherd mix. She sustained a broken femur and two broken pelvic bones.
After being hit on the bypass near Division Street, the dog rolled and then dragged herself to a snowbank off the side of the road.
She was brought to and cared for at KinniCroix & River Falls Veterinary Hospital, 1055 E. Cascade Ave.
The dog’s complicated injuries require the skills of a specialist. An animal orthopedic surgeon will do today’s operation.
The fundraising to pay for the operation has been growing by word of mouth since the Journal first broke the online story Tuesday.
Contributions by credit card and checks were being funneled through the Goodhue County Humane Society in Red Wing, Minn.
A KinniCroix employee said the injured dog was resting comfortably until Thursday afternoon when she begin to cry a little and nip at her injured hip. She was being given pain medication and antibiotics.
Last night she was finally taken to the U of M animal hospital in preparation for today’s surgery.
