Fourteen new men and women have joined the school district’s staff as school begins next week.
Linda Berg, Hometown: Chippewa Falls
College education: Graduated in 1984 from DePaul University in Chicago
Family: My husband’s name is Kyle. We have two children: Ivy, a 20-year-old student at the University of Minnesota in the Twin Cities; and Kelsey, an 18-year-old student at St. Scholastica in Duluth.
Interests: I like biking, reading and skiing
Teaching assignment: I’ll be a teacher at and the coordinator of the Renaissance Academy.
Zac Campbell, Hometown: Baldwin
College education: I graduated in 2007 from St. Cloud State University in St. Cloud, Minn., with a bachelor’s degree in physical education.
Family: I’m married to Brooke and we have a dog named Rookie
Interests: I enjoy watching and taking part in sports, and spending time with my family
Teaching assignment: I’ll be teaching physical education at the high school.
Andrea Chaffee, Hometown: River Falls
College education: I graduated in 2005 from UW-River Falls with a bachelor’s degree in Spanish education.
Family: I’ve been married to husband Luke for six years. We’re raising a daughter, Lara, who was born in January.
Interests: “I’m an avid reader (member of three book clubs!) and I love spending time with my friends and family. I also enjoy cooking recipes that take hours to make, spending time at the cabin and board games.”
Teaching assignment: I’ll be teaching Spanish at the high school on a part-time basis.
Vickie deJager-Pound, Hometown: Waupun
College education: I graduated from UW-River Falls with a major in English and from Augsburg College in Minneapolis with a major in special education.
Family: I’m married to Alan Pound. We have two sons: Harry and Christian Pound.
Interests: My hobbies include reading, walking and photography
Teaching assignment: I’ll be a teacher in the Harbor Program at the River Falls Academy building.
Jeff Hahn, Hometown: Kennan
College education: I graduated from UW-River Falls with a Bachelor of Science in secondary education and mathematics in 2001
Family: I’m married to Grettel Hecht
Interests: I enjoy coaching, running, hunting and fishing.
Teaching assignment: I’ll be teaching algebra II and pre-algebra at the high school.
Joan Nelson, Hometown: I grew up in Cambridge, Minn., and have lived in Lakeland, Minn., during my married life.
College education: I graduated in 1992 from UW-River Falls with a degree in elementary education; and earned a Master of Library and Information Science degree in 2008 from Dominican University.
Family: My husband’s name is Myron. We have two children: Carissa and Jess; and two grandsons: Five-year-old Jake and three-year-old Tyler.
Interests: I like reading, walking, biking, playing the piano, cross stitching and crocheting.
Teaching assignment: I’m the new media specialist at Rocky Branch Elementary.
Stephanie Nelson, Hometown: Sheboygan
College education: I graduated from St. Cloud State University in 2007 with a degree in physical education.
Family: My family includes: Chase, my husband; Pat and Chuck Brendel, my parents; and my brother, Nate.
Interests: I enjoy playing sports.
Teaching assignment: I’ll be teaching physical education at the high school.
Kim Pavlichek, Hometown: River Falls
College education: I earned a Bachelor of Arts in political science and international relations in 1983 from the University of Minnesota, and completed a teacher’s certification from UW-RF this year.
Family: I’m married to Joe Pavlichek and we’re raising our children: Kelsey, Kristi and Jacob Bukkila and Zach Pavlichek.
Interests: I enjoy spending time with my family, reading, digital photography, biking, knitting and fishing, but only when the air is warm and the water is calm.
Teaching assignment: I’ll be teaching fourth grade students at Greenwood Elementary, however, some may have met me already. I’ve been a paraprofessional at Greenwood during the last 8 1/2 years. I worked in the computer lab and with fifth-graders.
Anne Rasmussen, Hometown: St. Charles, Minn.
College education: I graduated in 2003 from UW-Platteville with an elementary education degree. My minors were in early childhood, special education/inclusion and psychology.
Family: I have two brothers. The older one is a principal in Lancaster; the younger one is a loan officer in Altura, Minn.
Interests: I enjoy scrapbooking, quilting, camping, traveling, reading and spending time with my friends and family.
Teaching assignment: I’ll be teaching first grade students at Greenwood Elementary.
Ashley Schertz, Hometown: Clintonville
College education: I graduated from Ripon College in 2008 with degrees in elementary education and English.
Family: My parents live in Embarrass, and my sister, Alysha, lives in Milwaukee.
Interests: I enjoy volleyball, reading, writing, running and spending time with family, friends and my dog.
Teaching assignment: I’ll be teaching language arts in the 7 Gold House at Meyer Middle School and coaching volleyball.
Charlotte Sortedahl, Hometown: Spring Valley
College education: I graduated from the University of Minnesota.
Family: My family consists of two kids and a spouse.
Interests: I enjoy scrapbooking and skiing.
Assignment: I’ll be working as a school nurse.
Chad Sova, Hometown: Spooner
College education: I graduated from UW- Eau Claire with a major in elementary education and minor in science.
Family: My parents are Cathy and Bill Sova and I have one brother, Chase.
Interests: I enjoy cycling, skiing, running, hockey and anything outdoors.
Teaching assignment I’ll be teaching fifth graders at Greenwood Elementary.
Ben Toppel, Hometown: Madison
College education: I earned an elementary education degree in 2008 through the UW-River Falls graduate program.
Family: I’m a father and a husband.
Interests: I enjoy bird watching, hiking, bike riding and kayaking.
Teaching assignment I’ll be teaching third graders at Greenwood Elementary.
Kelly Weiss, Hometown: Menomonie
College education: I earned Bachelor of Science degrees in vocational rehabilitation and special education from UW-Stout in 2005.
Family: My husband’s name is Paul. We’re raising two children: Katelyn (6) and Eric (4).
Interests: I enjoy playing in a community band; watching my family race in motocross; and running.
Teaching assignment I’ll be a transition coordinator/teacher at the high school.
