John Walter Gordon, 87, died Monday, July 21, 2008, at the River Falls Area Hospital.
He was born on Sept. 4, 1920, in the town of Wilkinson in Rusk County, a son of John and Katharyne Szczeck Gordon.
On Feb. 24, 1949, he married Marie A. Gohde at SS. Peter & Paul Church in Weyerhaeuser. Marie died on Oct. 30, 1996.
He served in the U.S. Army/Air Force from March 1942 through July 1945, serving in the European, African and Middle Eastern theaters. He was in the 863rd Air Engineer Squadron. He was involved in maintenance on various airplanes and an engine mechanic for the 747.
After the war, he received his pilot’s license for small aircraft.
His hobbies included reading and hunting deer and bear with his family and friends.
He was town chairman for the town of Wilkinson for many years after his military services. He also worked with the DNR and Forestry Departments and was a self-employed logger and famer.
He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother; five sisters; and one great-grandson.
He is survived by a son, Monty and Colleen of Weyerhaeuser; three daughters: Kathryn and David Francois of Chetek, Debra and Dale Kaminski of Elk River, Minn., and Diane and Joseph Wrzosek of River Falls; seven grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
A funeral service was held on Saturday, July 26, at SS. Peter and Paul Church in Weyerhaeuser with Fr. Ed Mumper and Deacon Craig Voldberg officiating.
Burial was in the church cemetery with military honors provided by the Weyerhaeuser VFW.
