Man accused in real estate agent death pleads insanity
A man who allegedly killed a real estate agent who was showing him a house near Cambridge is now pleading innocent by insanity.
A man who allegedly killed a real estate agent who was showing him a house near Cambridge is now pleading innocent by insanity.
James Hole, 34, of suburban Chicago has withdrawn his earlier innocent plea in the death of Ann Nelson, 71, in March.
A trial is still scheduled this fall in Jefferson County.
If Hole is convicted, he could end up in a mental institution instead of prison.
A psychiatric evaluation was ordered on Friday.
Prosecutors said Hole admitted strangling and beating Nelson, taking items from her purse and starting the house on fire.
Defense lawyer John Rhiel said Hole has had a history of mental problems and that’s why the defendant changed his plea.
Officials said Hole finished a 10-year prison term in 2006 for an aggravated sexual assault in Illinois. He was charged with attacking and robbing a 69-year-old Illinois woman in January of this year.
The judge in the murder case has yet to decide whether his criminal record can be brought up in his possible Jefferson County trial.
For now, Hole is in jail under a $1 million bond.
