Busy year for Pierce County Farm Bureau

Members of the Pierce County Farm Bureau (FB) have been busy this past year supporting agriculture in the county and throughout the state.
Renewing membership is an ongoing adventure. New members are always welcome.
FB members are staying busy making plans for their Annual Farm Bureau Card Party. It will be held this Friday at 7:30 p.m. at the El Paso Bar and Grill. Euchre will be played, prizes will be awarded and door prizes will be given. A lunch will conclude the event. Everyone is welcome!
FB donated books to all the area schools in the county with funds provided from the Pierce County Farm Technology Days Grant. All schools received “Clarabelle,” “Fantastic Farm Machines” and the 2011 FB Book of the Year, “Seed Soil Sun.” These books were written by Cris Peterson, a Wisconsin resident and FB member. Dean Bergseng, vice president, spearheaded the project, while Wendy Kannel, district coordinator, and Monica Krings, women chairperson, helped present the books to all the school librarians.
Ag Day at the Capitol was held on Feb. 8 and many from the county attended this opportunity to hear and visit their legislators at the Capitol regarding farm policies. Phil Verges, Pierce County FB President, organized the trip to Madison.
Food Check-Out Week was held during the week of Feb. 19. Seventy-five dollars was given to the Pierce County Food Pantry on behalf of the Pierce County FB. Now in its 14th year, the week also highlights America’s safe, abundant and affordable food supply, made possible largely by America’s productive farmers and ranchers. According to the most recent (2010) information from the USDA’s Economic Research Service, American families and individuals spend, on average, less than 10 percent of their disposable personal income for food.
Country-Side Cooperatives and Pierce County FB donated funds toward the expenses of Tanner Brown and Phil Conklin, River Falls FFA members, who attended FFA Farm Forum, Feb. 24-25, in Wisconsin Rapids. It is an opportunity for FFA members attending this conference to grow as future agricultural leaders and learn about current topics in the agriculture industry.
Another big project FB is involved in is the Wisconsin Ag in the Classroom Ag Essay Contest. Information regarding the contest was given to all fourth and fifth grade students in Pierce County schools. Upon return of the completed essays, a winner will be chosen who best summarizes: “Why Crops and Plants are important to Wisconsin Agriculture …”
Looking ahead, the Pierce County Fair will be here soon. FB members will again be serving ice cold milk and cookies. It’s a great way to enjoy the fair while having milk and cookies for a snack.
