DNR shares Warden Peterson's role in collaring robbery suspect
Fresh from answering a deer hunting complaint on public land at 6 p.m. on November 18, Warden Brad Peterson was cruising through the Village of Ellsworth in his Department of Natural Resources truck when he got the radio call from the Pierce County Sheriff’s Department about a just-happened suspected bank robbery in nearby Plum City.
Peterson immediately hit his emergency lights, siren and took off for Plum City.
Peterson immediately hit his siren, emergency lights and picked up the speed on U.S. Highway 10 heading east toward Plum City, according to a press release sent statewide, Wednesday afternoon by DNR officials.
“The sheriff was several miles ahead of me when she radioed that the suspect vehicle just passed her,” Peterson said. So Peterson killed his lights, siren and lifted his foot off the accelerator and resumed the posted speed limit.
He knew it was just a matter of minutes before the suspect’s vehicle would be speeding by traveling west on U.S. Highway 10. Peterson didn't have to wait long.
“As soon as he passed me, I spun on him and got close enough to run the plates through dispatch,” Peterson said. “He didn’t realize I was behind him.”
All the while, Peterson was in contact with another Pierce County Sheriff’s Department deputy traveling east on U.S. Highway 10. The two officers agreed the deputy would immediately spin his car once he passed the suspect’s car and Peterson’s warden truck.
With the two law enforcement vehicles together following the suspect vehicle, Peterson and the deputy then hit their lights and stopped the robbery suspect. The suspect was handcuffed and placed under arrest.
An unknown amount of cash was found in the back seat and the suspect also was found to be intoxicated and will be charged for his 8th operating while intoxicated offense. The FBI and Pierce County Sheriff's Dept. are continuing the investigation.
For Peterson, catching the bank robbery suspect was just part of another day working the outdoor beat.
