His family knew the late Zachary Siewert as someone who was always helping others.

Many of the employees with whom Siewert worked on the family farm remembered how he was willing to loan them money and some never got the chance to pay him back, they said Thursday. The 22-year-old would bring friends home and ask for jobs for them, even appealing on their behalf for second chances if they were in jeopardy of being fired.

“He was always giving back to the community,” said his mother Jill, joined by her husband Bob and Siewert’s brother, Max, sister, Samantha, with her newborn son, Jacob Zachary, plus Interim Director Dan Morth of the Ellsworth Ambulance Service during an informal meeting at the ambulance hall.

The Ellsworth family said they’re grateful to the service for their response to Siewert’s accident last month. They plan to provide some monetary support to the ambulance unit.

“A lot of people gave money to us,” Mrs. Siewert said about the community’s generosity in their time of sorrow and their intentions to reciprocate.

Meantime, the accident victim’s friends have scheduled a public benefit in his honor for Saturday, Aug. 6, with part of the proceeds going to the service,
